Question :

Hello All,

Can someone please tell me , how much is the monthly expenditure in Tokyo if only husband is working in IT company and size of the family is 2 adults and one school going kid. Is 15 million in Japan enough ?

Also is child education is free there up to a certain class like in Europe?

TIA.

General answer:

While coming to Japan there can be substantial increase in your expenses considering school fees, taxes(income tax, ward tax), pension contributions. & health insurance. You must understand this before you decide. Amount in hand can be a crunch based on the lifestyle you are used to in India.

Depends on your priorities. But 15 M is good enough for starting a life in Japan. The standard of living is definitely much better than India. If you have been a global traveler earlier, it will definitely add weightage to your profile going forward. As already been given a rough estimate I will just quickly give a rundown of the same.
Rent is 150k to 200k depending on your choice of apartment.
Electricity, Phones, Internet and Gas will be 50-60k yen
Grocery will be 10-15k
Daily Vegetable and Supplies will be 1000-1500 per day. So it will be 30k-45k per month
School costs for IB schools will be 2.5 M yen to 3.2 M yen per child
School costs for Indian International School will be 600k per year as of now per child if studying in Grade 9 and below else it will be 1200k per year
Taxes and Social Security will be 200-250k yen per month

In community, some answered this question with figure 1 to 2 lacs, some friends said 2 lac 40 thousand and some said said 3 lacs.

For most of the people we have spoken to and based on our life experience here, this amount should come between 2,00,000 yens to 2,50,000 yens assuming you are living a comfortable family life. One can go extreme to reduce this.

On the other hand, there are no upper limits to this amount and can vary a lot depending on if one decides to use personal vehicles, pay for parking, owns one house over renting or does invest in assets or businesses here.
