What Happens If You Get A Traffic Ticket in Japan?
Important information for everyone to know
In Japan, receiving a traffic ticket involves understanding the country’s unique system of ticket classifications, demerit points, and payment procedures.
Types of Tickets:
White Tickets:
Minor infractions (e.g., not wearing a seatbelt). No fines but accrue demerit points.
Blue Tickets: Moderate infractions (e.g., illegal turns, red light violations). These carry fines and 3-6 demerit points.
Red Tickets:
Serious offenses (e.g., driving under the influence, driving without a license). They result in hefty fines, mandatory court appearances, and license suspension.
Yellow Tickets:
Parking violations or camera-captured offenses. These must be taken to a police station to determine the actual fine and points.
Demerit Points:
Demerit points are assigned based on the severity of the offense. Accumulating too many points can lead to license suspension or revocation. Points range from minor (e.g., 1 point for speeding under 20 kph over the limit) to severe (e.g., 25 points for driving without a license or high BAC levels).
Fines:
Fines vary based on the offense and vehicle type. For instance, exceeding the speed limit by 35-40 kph results in fines ranging from ¥20,000 to ¥40,000, depending on the vehicle.
Drinking and Driving:
Japan has strict penalties for drinking and driving. A BAC over 0.03% can lead to imprisonment and fines, with harsher penalties for higher BAC levels. Passengers and those providing the vehicle or alcohol can also face severe penalties.
Paying Fines:
Fines must be paid in cash at banks or post offices within seven days. Failure to pay can lead to additional notifications and potential criminal procedures. Disputing a fine requires a court appearance.
For detailed traffic laws and updates, the Japan Automobile Federation offers a multilingual booklet, “Rules of the Road.”
