India Emerges as Key Player in Global Semiconductor Industry Amid Shifting Supply Chains

The chipmaking equipment industry is increasingly turning its attention to India, viewing it as a viable alternative to China amidst geopolitical tensions. This shift is highlighted by SEMI’s decision to host its Semicon exhibition near New Delhi, marking the first such event in India. Companies like Tokyo Electron and Disco are slated to showcase their advanced equipment, reflecting growing interest in India’s semiconductor market potential.

While India’s semiconductor infrastructure is currently underdeveloped compared to China, recent investments and initiatives, including plans by Tata Group and Micron Technology to establish fabs in Gujarat, signify significant progress. These developments are bolstered by Apple’s relocation of production facilities and expectations for robust growth in smartphone and PC manufacturing.

Despite challenges such as infrastructure deficiencies, the Indian government’s commitment to fostering semiconductor production, supported by substantial investments, suggests a promising trajectory for the country’s semiconductor ecosystem. As global supply chains diversify away from China, India’s role in semiconductor manufacturing and procurement is expected to expand, potentially positioning it among the top global chip ecosystems by 2029.
