Nara is one of the ancient Japanese capitals. In the 8th century, the Indian priest Bodhisena (Bodaisenna in Japanese) traveled there to visit the Todaiji Temple, now a World Heritage site, to perform a ceremony said to infuse its Great Buddha statue with spirit.
