Kanwaljeet Jawa becomes 1st Indian to be appointed as board member of Daikin

Kanwaljeet Jawa’s hands-on approach has helped Daikin win the Indian market by toppling formidable rivals such as LG and Samsung Image: Madhu Kapparath

Japanese air-conditioner maker Daikin IndustriesLtd has appointed it’s India operations MD & CEO Kanwaljeet Jawainto the board of the parent company.

As per a media release, Mr Jawa will be the first Indian on the Daikin Industries boardand will be part of the ten member board council, that will steer the future of Daikinglobally. This is as per Daikin’s strategy to include leadership from emerging markets and promote ethnic and gender diversity on their boards.

Toshio Nakano, chairman at Daikin Air-conditioning India, said the appointment is a move as per the Daikin corporate governance code to make boards more open to gender balance and people with international background.

“Institutional investors and shareholders are also supporting our approach that supports boardroom diversity, imperative to operating global organizations in a borderless world. Jawa has been the change agent for Daikin India’s turnaround since 2010,” said Nakano.

Jawa joined Daikin India in 2010 as the COO and later became the MD & CEO who transformed an engineering company to a full scale HVAC
