It is very essential to document the important events, specially when an event is bound to go down in history and will be used as example that this was the trigger of theatrical performances amongst Indians in Japan. It is even more matter of pride, we get to witness and be part of it when the history was being penned down on the stage. Words will not do justice as compared what our 5 senses witnessed. But will still try to give you some glimpse from it.

On the evening of May 31st, Morishita Hall was buzzing with excitement as the second houseful show of “Raatra 16 Janewarichi” took place. Despite the expectation of a storm, the weather cleared up just in time for theater enthusiasts to witness an unforgettable performance.

The Atmosphere

The audience, a mix of Indian expatriates and curious Japanese attendees, was welcomed warmly. The night began with opening remarks by Prem Keswani, followed by an insightful introduction by Niranjan Gadgil, the director and promotor of 4th Wall Theatre Productions.

The Performance

The show started at 6:30 PM as promised. “Raatra 16 Janewarichi” delves into the mysterious death of Ketan Patel, a Mumbai gold tycoon. The theater was transformed into a courtroom, making the audience feel like part of the trial. Each witness added a new layer to the story, keeping everyone on the edge of their seats.

The performances were outstanding. The actors brought their characters to life with such conviction that it felt like a real courtroom. The exchanges between the advocates and witnesses were gripping, especially the portrayal of Bakul, Ketan Patel’s secretary.

After an hour, there was a 10-minute intermission. The audience was buzzing with excitement, discussing theories about the trial. The second half of the play intensified, leading to the crucial question: Is Bakul guilty or not? This thought-provoking theme resonated deeply with everyone present.

“Raatra 16 Janewarichi” is a Marathi adaptation of Ayn Rand’s “Night of January 16th,” which debuted on New York’s Broadway in 1935. This courtroom drama, originally penned by Rand, ran for an impressive 283 performances. The Marathi version has been expertly translated and adapted by Pune based Dr. Shantanu Abhyankar , capturing the essence of the original while resonating with Marathi-speaking audiences. Special thanks to the translators who brought this gripping tale to the Marathi theater scene.

Audience Reaction

The audience reactions were overwhelmingly positive. One attendee remarked, “Each character’s performance was truly outstanding and felt very professional.” Another noted, “We felt like we were in a real courtroom.” The impressive memorization of long dialogues and unexpected story twists kept many on the edge of their seats, with one audience member stating, “How can they remember such long dialogues? The story twists kept us on edge.” A newcomer to Marathi theater shared, “I came with zero expectations, and these actors amazed me.” Despite the two-hour runtime, another attendee mentioned, “It didn’t feel like it was a two-hour show; time just flew by.” A particularly enthusiastic viewer exclaimed, “I am blown away by what I just saw,” while another found the plot impeccable, saying, “I found the story plot impeccable.” Many appreciated the hard work behind the scenes, with one remarking, “All the hard work by each member, on stage and behind the scenes, was evident.” Some even suggested it marked the start of Marathi 2.0 in Japan, signaling a new era for Marathi theater in the country. One audience member said, “It felt like I was at Balgandharva,” referring to the famous theater in Pune. When got to talk to people behind the scenes, we came to know that months of practices and preparation went behind this live performance. Kudos to the whole team.
