Japan passes law on flexible work for parents with young children

Parliament has just passed a groundbreaking law designed to support working parents and promote gender equality in the workplace! ๐ŸŽ‰ Starting April 2025, companies will be required to implement significant changes to help employees balance work and child-rearing responsibilities.

Key Highlights:

๐Ÿ‘ถ Flexible Work Options: Companies must offer at least two flexible working arrangements, such as remote work, shorter hours, or staggered schedules, for employees with children aged 3 and older.

๐Ÿ  Remote Work for Parents: Efforts must be made to accommodate remote work for parents with children under the age of 3.

๐Ÿ•’ Extended Overtime Exemptions: Employees with young children can now be exempt from overtime work until their children enter elementary school, extending the previous limit from age 3.

๐Ÿ’ผ Expanded Childcare Leave: Childcare leave for sick or injured children will be extended to cover up to the third grade. This leave can also be used for attending nursery school entrance ceremonies and during school closures due to infectious diseases.

๐Ÿ“Š Increased Transparency: Companies with over 300 employees must disclose the percentage of male employees taking childcare leave. Companies with over 100 employees are required to set targets for such leave.

๐Ÿ‘ต Eldercare Support: To prevent employee turnover due to eldercare responsibilities, companies must provide information on public support programs to employees aged 40 and above.

๐Ÿ“š Government Support: The government will survey child-rearing support programs across the nationโ€™s 1,741 municipalities to compile a comprehensive database by March 2025. This data will be integrated into private-sector child-rearing support apps, ensuring parents and guardians have access to critical information and benefits, including mandatory medical examinations for children.
