Ensuring Pension Enrollment for Foreign Residents in Japan:

The Japanese government is strengthening efforts to ensure that all foreign residents in Japan are enrolled in the country’s public pension program. Currently, foreign residents aged 20 to 59 with an address in Japan are required to enroll in the pension system, which entitles them to social security benefits and pension payments starting at age 65.

Starting from October, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare plans to upgrade the Japan Pension Service system. This upgrade will allow the government to access data on foreigners upon their arrival in Japan. If a foreign resident is identified as not enrolled in the pension system, the ministry will send a notification requesting enrollment. If there is no response, the ministry will have the authority to enroll the individual.

This initiative aims to close gaps in enrollment and ensure that all foreign residents contribute insurance premiums appropriately. For fiscal 2024, the monthly contribution amount for the national pension stands at 16,980 yen ($108).

Ensuring comprehensive enrollment in the public pension program is part of Japan’s commitment to social security and equitable treatment of all residents, regardless of nationality. This move underscores the importance of compliance with pension obligations for a secure and stable retirement future in Japan.
